Bringing Autumn to Life Through Music: Fun Seasonal Family Activities

Updated: Apr 15

Autumn leaves in vivid orange and yellow hues against a bright blue sky, creating a warm and vibrant fall atmosphere.

Autumn brings crisp air, golden leaves, and the perfect opportunity to explore music in creative ways! Whether you're singing, making instruments from nature, or rewriting lyrics, here are some fun ways to embrace the season with kids.

1. Sing with the Leaves

Head outside and collect vibrant autumn leaves from any trees. Use them as props while singing songs about the season, like “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” with a new twist:

"Twinkle, twinkle, falling leaf, dancing in the autumn breeze."

Kids can shake their leaves to the beat or toss them into the air at key moments in the song.

2. Make an Autumn Bush Band

Turn nature into instruments! Crunchy leaves can be rustled like percussion, seed pods shaken in a jar as maracas, or sticks tapped together like rhythm sticks. Try mimicking the sounds of the Aussie bush in your songs!

Autumn trees with vibrant red, orange, and yellow leaves line a park path by a river. Clear blue sky and calm mood.

3. Rewrite Classic Songs

Take well-known children’s tunes and give them an autumn twist! Adapt “The Wheels on the Bus” to:

"The leaves on the trees float down, down, down, all through the town"

Let kids come up with their own creative verses about migrating birds, chilly mornings, or warm autumn sun.

4. Create an Autumn Soundscape

Use voices and instruments to recreate the sounds of the season—how does the wind whisper through the eucalypts? What sound does a crackling campfire make? Layering these sounds together can bring autumn to life through music.

Autumn leaves in shades of red, orange, and brown cover the ground densely, creating a textured, earthy backdrop.

Music is a fantastic way to connect with nature and creativity. Try these ideas with your family and enjoy the beauty of the Australian autumn through song! 🍂🎶
