Summer Sounds: Building DIY Ukuleles

There’s something about summer that naturally draws us toward creativity. Maybe it’s the slower pace, the brighter colours, or the sense of play that returns when the days get longer. In music therapy, this season often invites us to step back from structure and reconnect with the simple joy of making music - without pressure, without perfection.

That is why we have created our DIY ukulele for summer!

What I enjoy most about this activity is how naturally it creates moments of connection. Clients get to make something with their hands, explore how sound works, and add their own personality to it.

The task also gives us a break from needing things to be polished or “perfect.” It’s not about producing a real instrument - it’s about enjoying the process. People often open up more when they’re doing something practical and playful, and the simplicity of the ukulele makes that easy. People choose colours, patterns, stickers, or textures that often tell us more about their interests or mood than a direct question would.

In summer, when energy can be a bit lower or attention a bit more scattered, this activity feels achievable. It’s hands-on without being demanding, creative without being overwhelming, and musical without requiring skill. It gives clients something they can take ownership of and something they can actually use straight away, even if it’s just to strum along to their favourite summer song.

Mostly, I like this activity because it keeps things fun and grounded. It reminds us that music therapy doesn’t always need big goals or complex setups to be meaningful—sometimes a simple, homemade ukulele is enough to spark engagement, curiosity, and a sense of accomplishment
